Vladimir Lyubarov’s solo exhibition «Year of Theatre in the Village of Peremilovo» opens at the Theatre Gallery on Malaya Ordynka on 6 March. The exhibition features artist’s works from the painting series of the same name.
The village of Peremilovo is the main scene of almost all the stories of the artist’s pictorial series. This time, his characters take part in the Year of the Theatre: they all participate in the performances of the amateur village theatre and transform into heroes of the works of Pushkin, Lermontov, Ostrovsky, Tolstoy, Gorky, Chekhov and even Shakespeare, Moliere and Beaumarchais.
Lyubarov says that the complete absence of «the fourth wall» between actors and spectators, who comment on what is happening on stage and sometimes even require changing the final to a more optimistic one, can be considered as a peculiarity of the Peremilovo theatre. So, for example, the audience managed to reconcile Onegin with Lensky during a duel, Othello did not stifle Desdemona, and the Chekhov’s three sisters were glad they did not go to Moscow, but stayed in the province.
