The Museum-Estate of A.N.Ostrovsky/The Theatre Gallery on Malaya Ordynka

The exhibition «Vladimir Anshon. Cultural Transit Tallinn – Moscow» will be held at the Theatre Gallery in Malaya Ordynka as a part of the Estonia 100 jubilee programme. The project represents different works of Vladimir Anshon, one of the leading theatre designers of Estonia, a member of the Artists’ Union and the Estonian Theatre Association, the UNESCO Prize Laureate, the Estonian State Prize Laureate, a participant of many international theatrical projects.

The exhibition name – «Cultural Transit» – shows the idea of the display: like a transit terminal, the gallery will be transformed into a kind of intermediate space in which various forms of material culture are concentrated. The past, the present and the future are closely connected there, smoothly changing and forming each other.

The display will feature set models, designs for performances, photographs and portraits, as well as objects that had been shown at the international exhibitions World StageDesign and the Prague Quadrenale. Besides that, the display includes an art cycle called «The Word in the Void. Malevich No. 10.1» dedicated to the «Black Square» phenomenon. The cycle central work is an icon «The Savior Crowned with Thorns» created according to the size of the «Black Square».

The exhibition «Vladimir Anshon. Cultural Transit Tallinn – Moscow» gives a rare opportunity to watch the video versions of 3 performances at the Tallinn City Theatre. Two productions were created together with director Adolf Shapiro: «It’s Like That» (2008) based on the play by Luigi Pirandello and «Return to Father» (2015) based on the play by Madis Kõiv. The third play «We Are Heroes», based on the original text by Jean-Luc Lagarce, was staged in 2010 by Elmo Nuiganen, the theatre art director.
