Lentulov’s Day! The Worse It Is, the Better It Is

In the context of the exhibition «Aristarkh Lentulov’s Mystery Bouffe» the A.A. Bakhrushin Theatre Museum holds an avant-garde day under the motto of the Knave Of Diamonds group «the worse it is, the better it is» on 3 September. The museum managed to gather a rich collection of the Lentulov’s works from all over Russia to the artist’s 135th anniversary. The festive atmosphere created by Lentulov turned out to lack space in the walls of the exhibition hall, so we want to dedicate on 3 September all the time and all the space we have to the artist and his era. There will be guided tours, public talks, film screenings, a jazz concert, a vintage market at the Theatre Museum on this day. We will be transported a hundred years ago in the energetic and luxurious era of the avant-garde. We will get involved in adventures, watch films and discuss art.

In the first half of the day Svetlana Jafarova, an art expert, an expert of the Russian avant-garde, a specialist of Lentulov’s art, will give a tour about the Russian avant-garde, where she will tell about key events in the history of painting in the first half of the 20th century. With the help of Aristarkh Lentulov’s works we will try to understand what happened a hundred years ago with Russian and world society and art. A walk in the company of Russian avant-gardists is scheduled in the museum’s garden: students of the Moscow Art Theatre School will be transformed into people, pictures and images of the first two decades of the twentieth century.

At the Coach House we will show the film of L. Schwartz «Aristarkh Lentulov, the Artist of the Sun» and talk about art, collecting and value system in a family of artists with the great-grandson of Aristarkh Lentulov, Fyodor Lentulov, who is an artist too.

In the evening a jazz concert will be held outdoors and cocktails will be offered to guests.

We prepared a special programme for kids, which is called «I am an Artist!». Together with Maya Khlobystina, a head of the studio «Little History of Art», children will reproduce Aristarkh Lentulov’s masterpieces in collage technique. Honoured Artist of Russia Alexander Rubtsov will hold a master class «I am an Actor!», where he will show how to immerse in the world of the actor’s game.

We hope that every guest will become a part of the theatrical performance; therefore we propose to follow a dress code: the avant-garde of the 1910-1920’s. The author of the most extravagant costume will get a special gift. We will choose him according to the principle: the worse it is, the better it is.

A ticket can be purchased on the ground. A ticket price includes visiting the exhibition «Aristarkh Lentulov’s Mystery Bouffe» and the permanent museum display, a jazz concert, a cocktail, (two master classes for children when buying a family ticket).

Tours and programmes:

13:00 A special tour of Aristarkh Lentulov’s exhibition with its curator Svetlana Jafarova. Exhibition tours as usual: 14:30, 16:00, 17:30, 19:00, tour guide – T. Batova.

15:00 Manor territory. A walk with Russian avant-gardists (with participation of students of the Moscow Art Theatre School).

17:00 Coach House. Screening of the film of L. Schwartz «Aristarkh Lentulov, the Artist of the Sun», meeting with the great-grandson of Aristarkh Lentulov, an artist Fyodor Lentulov.

19:00 Manor territory. A jazz concert in the open air.

A trio of modern music: Sergey Letov (saxophone, aerophone), Alexey Kruglov (saxophone), Vadim Pravilov (contrabass).

A vintage market is open on the territory of the museum all day long.
